GunCrisis: Philadelphia shooting report for June 1, 2012

Neighbors gathered around the crime where a sheet covered the body of a 17-year killed in a South Philadelphia shootout Thursday night — while hospitals treated numerous other shooting victims across the city and region. Joe Kaczmarek of the GunCrisis reporting team photographed this scene around the 1700 block of South 5th Street, after the teen was pronounced dead around 10 p.m.

According to, the victim was identified by relatives as Nasir Westbrook, who may have been killed when a friend of his returned fire during a shootout. More a dozen shots were fired along the block, and one suspect was taken in by detectives.

A short time later, police said that three more shooting victims arrived at two area hospitals, reporting they had been wounded at 8th and Jackson Streets at about the same time, but police said it was not clear if the events were related.

NBC10 is reporting that a 20-year-old man may be brain dead following a shooting on North American Street in the Olney section of the city, also around the same time.

CBS3 is reporting four unrelated overnight shootings across the Delaware River in Camden, NJ and NBC10 is reporting that a 17-year-old was wounded further south in Glassboro, NJ.

Finally, the SEPTA worked who was shot yesterday in Philadelphia has died from his wounds.
