Shootings leave one dead, one critical and four more wounded in Philadelphia

July came in with a new rash of violence across Philadelphia overnight, leaving at least six people shot, including one fatally and another left in critical condition.

Joe Kaczmarek of the GunCrisis reporting project covered three locations.

A teenager was hospitalized in stable condition after he was shot in the back at this gas station at Hunting Park and Germantown Avenues just before midnight.

Shortly after 2 a.m., police stopped this vehicle which they say they spotted fleeing from the scene of a shooting at 7th and Appletree Streets, just about a block from police headquarters in Center City. Police found a second shooting victim inside, who was treated and transported by paramedics. The other men in the vehicle — who may have been rushing their wounded friend to the hospital — were released by police.

The victim at the original location was shot in the head and hospitalized in critical condition.

About an hour later, police were responding to the report of an unconscious man on 4th Street near Lombard Street in the Society Hill section of the city — and found a 32-year-old man with a gunshot wound to the chest.

He was taken to Jefferson University Hospital, where was pronounced dead.

Police investigated throughout the morning but the absence of shell casings or other evidence has led police to consider if the man shot at another location.

At least two more shooting victims — and six stabbing victims — have also been reported at additional locations across the city over the last 24 hours. Only one arrest has been reported.
