Friends gathered for a candlelight vigil in last week, organized by the transgender group BLITZ in remembrance of Krya Cordova, a 27-year-old transgender woman found shot to death in Philadelphia on Labor Day. Melody Kramer shared a photo:

Police were searching for information after the victim was found in Northeast Philadelphia, according to philly.com.

Kruz was active and well-known in the Philadelphia LGBT community, worked in HIV/AIDS outreach, according to opposingviews.com, and was active in Pride events.

With a few months left in 2012, the country’s total number of transgender deaths could reach an all time high, according to outqnews.com. The Gay Peoples Chronicle reports that the August death of a Cincinnati transgender woman, classified as a hate crime, marked the 9th transgender homicide in the county. The shooting death of Krya Cordova makes ten.

Philadelphia Gay News is reporting that, according to her Facebook profile, Cordova graduated from North Penn Senior High School in Lansdale in 2003. Her MySpace page says she was in college studying biology, with aspirations of opening her own transgender medical facility.

Cordova’s body was found shortly after 5 a.m. on Labor Day with a gunshot wound to the head, more bad news for a community already grappling with the unsolved murders of transwomen Stacey Blahnik and Nizah Morris.

Memorial sites have been posted on Facebook and Tumblr.
