Gripped by violence in Asbury Park, NJ

According to a report in the Asbury Park Press today, a local anti-violence coalition is pursuing “a program through which community stakeholders confront gang members in a form of intervention. The program will require additional coordination between the police, clergy and other community stakeholders, and would need a facilitator.”

The article reports that “what police believe to be a small but stubborn cadre of youths with easy access to guns” has been terrorizing parts of the city — with 43 shootings this year, including three homicides in September alone, in the small southwest section of this small city of 16,000 people.
