Violent weekend in Philadelphia passes without notice as media turns to hurricane

Fourteen people were wounded or killed by gunfire in Philadelphia during 12 incidents from Friday afternoon through Sunday.

Two victims were pronounced dead soon after they were attacked, and four more people were initially reported in critical condition, including three who had been shot in the head.

There were two double shootings, and seven of the weekend victims were shot multiple times, including an incident during which one man was shot six times and the second was shot five times.

Six of the victims were shot in West Philadelphia, four in North Philadelphia, and one each in the Frankford, Germantown, Northeast Philadelphia and Spring Garden sections of the city.

The oldest victim was 58, the youngest was 17 and the average age was 29. There were no women among the victims this weekend.

The GunCrisis reporting team found local reporting on Friday’s two victims, but as focus turned to Hurricane Sandy, we found not one local report on any of the 12 victims shot on Saturday and Sunday.
