Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel came out in support and NBA legend Isiah Thomas even helped to coach at a Peace Basketball Tournament Saturday, dedicated to a teenage shooting victim who was buried earlier the same day.
Organizers hope the event will lead to dialogue and friendships that trump gang affiliations and violence, according to a report at chicagotribune.com. The event also included talk about the consequences of gang violence.
“Through sport, through play, through community,” said Thomas, a former Detroit Pistons point guard who grew up on Chicago’s West Side, “people get to know one another. People learn to love one another.”
