Grim look back: Images from 2012

As the year comes to a close, Philadelphia Police data shows that the city’s homicide count — at 329 — has slightly exceeded last year’s losses — with one day to go. There have also been more than 3300 robberies with guns in the city and nearly 2500 aggravated assaults involving guns.

According to a report at 6ABC, Philadelphia Police Commissioner Ramsey says that shooting dropped from 1,278 so far in 2102, compared with 1,408 in 2011, although deaths were up, pointing to more powerful weapons with more ammo capacity in the hands of criminals.

At the same press conference Monday, District Attorney Seth Williams said that police received 154 reports of shots fired on last New Year’s Eve, according to philly.com.

At the GunCrisis Reporting Project, we plan to increase our coverage of gun crime in 2013, with an equal focus on solutions, and with hopes that we will have less to report in each coming year.
