Gun violence persists across Philadelphia and region throughout weekend

Philadelphia Police officers took a 37-year-old man into custody following an incident in which they say he pointed a gun at police and an officer returned fire, Sunday afternoon in the area of 11th and Huntingdon Street in the Hartranft section of the city. Police recovered a TEC-9 semi-automatic handgun, according to a report from FOX29, in which a witness told them she heard five shots fired before the police arrived.

Just a few blocks away, a 20-year-old man was shot multiple times at around 11 p.m. Sunday in the area of 10th and York Streets. Police rushed the wounded man to Temple University Hospital, where he was reported in stable condition with abdominal and leg wounds. Two more people men shot Sunday in the early-morning hours:

A 19-year-old man was shot to death at about 1:40 a.m. Sunday on Robinson Street, near Market and and 61st, in West Philadelphia. Medics rushed a 21-year-old man to Einstein Medical Center, where he was reported in stable condition after he was shot in the back on North Broad Street near Windrim Avenue in the Logan section of the city at about 2:15 a.m.

Late Saturday afternoon, a 19-year-old man was pronounced dead at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania after he was shot multiple times on Regent Street near 51st Street in the Kingsessing section of Southwest Philadelphia. A nearby Twitter user reported “just now 5 or 6 shots, vicinity of 51st and Regent, people running from rec center,” as the incident unfolded.

Two armed home invasion were reported late Sunday and early Monday in Philadelphia. Two men robbed a home near 61st and Walnut shortly before midnight Sunday in West Philadelphia. One shot was fired after two men broke into a home around 30th and Wharton Streets in Grays Ferry shortly before 5 a.m. Monday. No serious injuries were reported in either incident.

As we reported previously, four shooting incidents left six people wounded from Friday night into Saturday morning in Philadelphia.

In Wilmington, DE, police are investigating a shooting that left four people wounded Sunday night, according to 6ABC. Trenton, NJ, police have identified man shot to death Saturday night as 53-year-old Adelso Buendia, according to nj.com.

In Camden, NJ, a man was shot in the head Sunday afternoon, according to a Philadelphia Inquirer report. Camden County authorities announced Friday that they have a charged a woman in connection with a double shooting in June, according to nj.com.

As we reported Friday, Camden is on a path to see 25 percent fewer homicides this year, when compared to the record toll in 2012.

Atlantic City, NJ, authorities have issued a warrant for suspect in connection with a shooting last month, according pressofatlanticcity.com. Reading, PA, police are seeking a suspect for a Saturday night shooting, according to readingeagle.com.

Police in Harrisburg, PA, are also investigating a Saturday night shooting, according to pennlive.com, which also reports that city residents will meet Monday night to discuss how to stop the violence.
