Preliminary 2012 FBI UCR data

Annual rates — based on FBI data for 2012 — are shown in the column at left. Annual rate projections for 2013, at right, are based on recently-released FBI data for the first six months of the year.

Largest US cities: Total 2012 homicides: 2012 homicide rate per 100,000 residents: Homicides: January-June, 2013: Projected 2013 homicide rate:
 New York: 419  5 155  3.7
Los Angeles: 299  7.7 133  6.9
 Chicago: 500  18.4 179  13.2
 Houston: 217  10 105  9.7
 Philadelphia: 331  21.4 116  15
 Phoenix: 123  8.3 52  7
 San Antonio: 89  6.4 29  4
 San Diego: 47  3.5 19  2.8
 Dallas: 154  12.4 73  5.9
 San Jose: 45  4.6 24  4.9

The FBI cautions that attention to rankings can “lead to simplistic and/or incomplete analyses that often create misleading perceptions,” but it is worth noting that Philadelphia was at the top of the list for per capita homicides reported in the 15 largest US cities during 2012 as well, and continued to maintain that position in spite of great progress.
