Communities gathering to address gun violence in Philadelphia

Several community events have been scheduled around Philadelphia in the coming weeks, to remember the victims of violence and to find solutions.

Friday: Candle lighting for victims and survivors of violence

The Philadelphia Coalition for Victim Advocacy invites you to their annual candle lighting ceremony this Friday to mark National Victims’ Rights Week and to “remember and honor victims and survivors of violence, and to take a stand against crime in our communities.”

Meet at the First Unitarian Church at 2125 Chestnut Street. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the ceremony begins at 6:30. You can find more info on Facebook.

Tuesday: Vigil for homicide victims

The Richard Johnson Center at Saint Joseph’s University will be holding their eighth annual Vigil for Homicide Victims next Tuesday, April 8th at 7p.m., at the Chapel of St. Joseph, off of Cardinal Avenue. View the event flyer on Facebook.

Participants in the interdenominational service will light candles and read names to remember the 247 lives lost to violence in Philadelphia in 2013. Mayor Nutter is expected to attend.

The Gun Crisis Reporting Project partnered with the Richard Johnson Center and Philadelphia City Councilman Curtis Jones, Jr., for the #PhilaCrimeSummit in 2012.

April 18th: Good Friday Service

Heeding God’s Call, a faith-based movement to prevent gun violence, will hold their annual Good Friday service, “a city-wide ecumenical service… to honor lives lost to violence” at Sister Muhummad/Durham Park, at 47th Street and Wyalusing Avenue, at 4 p.m. View the event flyer on Facebook.
